Top 5 Ways To Prevent Lung Cancer

Top 5 Ways To Prevent Lung Cancer

Here are the cold facts about lung cancer - it's hard to find early and difficult to treat. I have learned it is one of the more miserable cancers to suffer from. However, lung cancer is also one of the most preventable types of cancer. That is the good news! By avoiding certain risk factors for lung cancer, we can reduce our chances of developing it. This is the first step in lung cancer prevention.

1. Quit smoking - NOW

Smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer. It is estimated that 87% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. As soon as you quit, your body reaps the benefits of being tobacco free. Quitting smoking is the BEST defense against lung cancer. Need help kicking the habit? Visit About's Quit Smoking Site.

2. Listen to Mom, and eat those fruits and veggies!

Fruits and vegetables are rich with antioxidants and flavonoids. Antioxidants and flavonoids help protect your cell's DNA and repair damaged cells.

3. Have your home tested for radon.

Radon is the result of broken down uranium. It is a radioactive gas that cannot be seen, felt, smelled or tasted. Uranium occurs naturally in the soil, and the fear is that homes are being built over natural deposits, creating high levels of indoor radon exposure, which can lead to lung cancer.

4. Know what you are being exposed to in the workplace.

If you are exposed to fumes, dust, chemicals, etc in the workplace, you have a right to know what you are being exposed to. Gasoline, diesel exhaust, arsenic, beryllium. vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, coal products, mustard gas, and chloromethyl ethers are all carcinogens and can be found in some work environments. Talk to your employer about limiting exposure.

5. Keep away from secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is the smoke exhaled from a smoker or smoke from a lit cigarette, pipe, or cigar. This smoke contains over 60 known carcinogens (agents causing cancer). These carcinogens interrupt normal cell development. This interference of cell development is what starts the cancer process.

20 more best tips to Prevent Cancer

20 more best tips to Prevent Cancer

1. Every time you go to the bathroom, stop by the kitchen or water cooler for a glass of water. A major study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1996 found that men who drank six 8-ounce glasses of water every day slashed their risk of bladder cancer in half. Another study linked the amount of water women drank to their risk of colon cancer, with heavy water drinkers reducing their risk up to 45 percent.

2. Take up a tea habit. The healing powers of green tea have been valued in Asia for thousands of years. In the West, new research reveals that it protects against a variety of cancers as well as heart disease. Some scientists believe that a chemical in green tea called EGCG could be one of the most powerful anticancer compounds ever discovered.

3. Have a beer tonight. Beer protects against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, known to cause ulcers and possibly linked to stomach cancer. But don’t overdo it. Drinking more than one or two alcoholic drinks a day may increase your risk of mouth, throat, esophageal, liver, and breast cancer.

4. Throw some salmon on the grill tonight. Australian researchers studying Canadians (go figure) found those who ate four or more servings of fish per week were nearly one-third less likely to develop the blood cancers leukemia, myeloma, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Other studies show a link between eating fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, halibut, sardines, and tuna, as well as shrimp and scallops) with a reduced risk of endometrial cancer in women. Ah, those amazing omega-3s at it again!

5. Take a multivitamin every morning. Many studies suggest getting the ideal levels of vitamins and minerals can improve your immune system function and help prevent a variety of cancers.

6. Get about 15 minutes of sunlight on your skin each day. You’ve heard of the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D haven’t you? Turns out we’ve been so good at heeding advice to slather on sun lotion and avoid the sun’s rays that many of us aren’t getting enough of this valuable nutrient. Researchers find that getting too little vitamin D may increase your risk of multiple cancers, including breast, colon, prostate, ovarian, and stomach, as well as osteoporosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and high blood pressure.
The best source? Exposure to UVB rays found in natural and artificial sunlight. About 15 minutes a day ought to do it. Avoid overexposure, of course. That can increase your risk for cancers of the skin. You can also get vitamin D in your calcium supplement if you choose a supplement that contains both.

7. Carry a shot glass in your beach bag. Then fill it with sunscreen and rub it all over your body. A shot glass holds about 1.5 ounces, which is how much sunscreen dermatologists estimate you need to protect yourself from the cancer-causing UV rays of the sun. Repeat every two hours.

8. Cut a kiwifruit in half, then scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Now eat! Kiwi is a little hand grenade of cancer-fighting antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and copper. You can also rub a couple of cut kiwifruit on a low-fat cut of meat as a tenderizer.

9. Use a condom and stick to one partner. The more sexual partners a woman has, the greater her risk of contracting human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes cervical cancer. Having an unfaithful husband also increases her risk.

10. Cut out high-fat animal protein. A Yale study found that women who ate the most animal protein had a 70 percent higher risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, while those who ate diets high in saturated fat increased their risk 90 percent. So switch to low-fat or nonfat dairy, have poultry or fish instead of beef or pork, and use olive oil instead of butter.

11. Have your partner feed you grapes. They’re great sources of resveratrol, the cancer-protecting compound found in wine, but don’t have the alcohol of wine, which can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Plus, the closeness such an activity engenders (we hope) strengthens your immune system.

12. Sprinkle scallions over your salad. A diet high in onions may reduce the risk of prostate cancer 50 percent. But the effects are strongest when they’re eaten raw or lightly cooked. So try scallions, Vidalia onions, shallots, or chives for a milder taste.

13. Make a batch of fresh lemonade or limeade. A daily dose of citrus fruits may cut the risk of mouth, throat, and stomach cancers by half, Australian researchers found.

Unnecessary Chemicals

14. Take a 30-minute walk every evening after dinner. That’s all it takes to reduce your breast cancer risk, according to a study from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Turns out that moderate exercise reduces levels of estrogen, a hormone that contributes to breast cancer. When 170 overweight, couch potato women ages 50-75 did some form of moderate exercise for about three hours a week, levels of circulating estrogen dropped significantly after three months. After a year, those who lost at least 2 percent of their body fat had even greater decreases in estrogen. Another study linked four hours a week of walking or hiking with cutting the risk of pancreatic cancer in half. The benefits are probably related to improved insulin metabolism due to the exercise.

15. Buy organic foods. They’re grown without added pesticides or hormones, both of which can cause cellular damage that may eventually lead to cancer.

16. Learn to love dandelions. Using commercial pesticides on your lawn may increase your risk of cancer, since most contain pesticides such as 2,4-D (linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and MCPP (associated with soft-tissue cancers). Plus, pesticides used solely on lawns don’t have to go through the same rigorous testing for long-term health effects as those used on food. And, as E/The Environmental Magazine noted in a 2004 article, no federal studies have assessed the safety of lawn-care chemicals in combination, the way most are sold.

17. Buy clothes that don’t need to be dry-cleaned. Many dry cleaners still use a chemical called perc (perchloroethylene), found to cause kidney and liver damage and cancer in animals repeatedly exposed through inhalation. Buying clothes that don’t require dry cleaning, or hand washing them yourself, can reduce your exposure to this chemical. If you must dry-clean your clothes, take them out of the plastic bag and air them outside or in another room before wearing.

18. Choose cucumbers over pickles, fresh salmon over lox. Studies find that smoked and pickled foods
contain various carcinogens.

19. Switch from french fries and potato chips to mashed potatoes and pretzels. A potential cancer-causing compound called acrylamide forms as a result of the chemical changes that occur in foods when they’re baked, fried, or roasted. Not surprisingly, many foods with the greatest amounts of acrylamide are also some of the worst-for-you foods, such as french fries, potato chips, and baked sweets. Although the results aren’t final yet, Michael Jacobson, Ph.D., executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, estimates acrylamide causes between 1,000 and 25,000 cancers per year. His agency has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to set limits on the amount of acrylamide foods can contain. The FDA is studying the issue.

20. Go for a spray-on tan. They’re available in most tanning salons these days and, unlike tanning beds, there’s no evidence that they increase your risk of skin cancer.

10 best Simple Ways to Prevent Cancer

10 best Simple Ways to Prevent Cancer

Most cancers don’t develop overnight or out of nowhere. Cancer is largely predictable, the end result of a decades-long process, but just a few simple changes in your daily life can significantly reduce your risk. Here are 31 great tips.

1. Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic. A Finnish study found that the fermentation process involved in making sauerkraut produces several other cancer-fighting compounds, including ITCs, indoles, and sulforaphane. To reduce the sodium content, rinse canned or jarred sauerkraut before eating.

2. Eat your fill of broccoli, but steam it rather than microwaving it. Broccoli is a cancer-preventing superfood, one you should eat frequently. But take note: A Spanish study found that microwaving broccoli destroys 97 percent of the vegetable’s cancer-protective flavonoids. So steam it, eat it raw as a snack, or add it to soups and salads.

3. Toast some Brazil nuts and sprinkle over your salad. They’re a rich form of selenium, a trace mineral that convinces cancer cells to commit suicide and helps cells repair their DNA. A Harvard study of more than 1,000 men with prostate cancer found those with the highest blood levels of selenium were 48 percent less likely to develop advanced disease over 13 years than men with the lowest levels. And a dramatic five-year study conducted at Cornell University and the University of Arizona showed that 200 micrograms of selenium daily — the amount in two unshelled Brazil nuts — resulted in 63 percent fewer prostate tumors, 58 percent fewer colorectal cancers, 46 percent fewer lung malignancies, and a 39 percent overall decrease in cancer deaths.

4. Pop a calcium supplement with vitamin D. A study out of Dartmouth Medical School suggests that the supplements reduce colon polyps (a risk factor for colon cancer) in people susceptible to the growths.

5. Add garlic to everything you eat. Garlic contains sulfur compounds that may stimulate the immune system’s natural defenses against cancer, and may have the potential to reduce tumor growth. Studies suggest that garlic can reduce the incidence of stomach cancer by as much as a factor of 12!

6. Sauté two cloves of crushed garlic in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, then mix in a can of low-sodium, diced tomatoes. Stir gently until heated and serve over whole wheat pasta. We already mentioned the benefits of garlic. The lycopene in the tomatoes protects against colon, prostate, and bladder cancers; the olive oil helps your body absorb the lycopene; and the fiber-filled pasta reduces your risk of colon cancer. As for the benefits of all of these ingredients together: They taste great!

7. Every week, buy a cantaloupe at the grocery store and cut it up after you put away your groceries. Store it in a container and eat several pieces every morning. Cantaloupe is a great source of carotenoids, plant chemicals shown to significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer.

The Power of Antioxidants

8. Mix half a cup of blueberries into your morning cereal. Blueberries rank number one in terms of their antioxidant power. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are unstable compounds that can damage cells and lead to diseases including cancer.

9. Learn to eat artichokes tonight. Artichokes are a great source of silymarin, an antioxidant that may help prevent skin cancer. To eat these delicious veggies, peel off the tough outer leaves on the bottom, slice the bottom, and cut off the spiky top. Then boil or steam until tender, about 30-45 minutes. Drain. Dip each leaf in a vinaigrette or garlic mayonnaise, then gently tear the fibrous covering off with your front teeth, working your way inward to the tender heart. Once there, gently scoop the bristles from the middle of the heart, dip in a little butter or lemon juice, and enjoy!

10. Coat barbecue food with a thick sauce. Grilling meat can create a variety of cancer-causing chemicals. But researchers from the American Institute for Cancer Research found that coating the meat with a thick marinade and thereby preventing direct contact with the charring flames reduced the amount of such chemicals created. Another tip: Precook your meat in
the oven and then throw it on the grill to finish.

Preventing and Reversing Cancer Naturally With Diet and Lifestyle

Preventing and Reversing Cancer Naturally With Diet and Lifestyle

While all cancers are easy to prevent they are not easy to reverse because it means making changes, especially dietary changes and most people find it difficult to make these important changes because of habits they have adopted. All cancers are curable but only by removing the reasons that caused it in the first place.

That is common sense.

To prevent someone from dying of cancer the best strategy is not to get it in the first place and the only way to do that is to practice prevention. By making a few simple changes someone can live without fear of being diagnosed with the problem. Nearly everyone is ignorant about its causes and we are kept ignorant by the powerful cancer industry because treating it today is extremely profitable. Profit plays a big part in anything to do with this disease.

Cancer is a modern day problem because of the way we now live compared to 40 to 50 years ago. Very few of us grow our own food now, instead we buy it from a supermarket and most of this food is highly processed and nutritionally depleted. We no longer get exercise thanks to the car and the television set and exercise is very important in maintaining our health. Then there are chemicals we now unwittingly use and there are said to be over 70 thousand in circulation today. They are found in the homes we live in and the products we use on our skin. All of the above are contributing factors to cancer.
To prevent cancer from first developing, it is important to eat fresh food every single day as freshly grown food keeps us healthy and cancer free. Also important is a little exercise as it keeps our immune system working efficiently. Preventing cancer is also about reading labels to be aware of products that contain chemicals that are causing us harm.

Reversing cancer for someone who's not been given a very bright future will have to be a full time commitment. Reversing cancer means dealing with the causes and removing the causes and you do that by changing from a typical western diet of refined and processed food to a strict diet of our natural food. A little exercise is important and be aware of the many chemicals we use everyday. There is no other way.

Cancer is only one disease no matter where it appears in the body and it's only our orthodox medical system that itemizes it, as to where it appears such as the bowel or breast. It is a disease of an immune system that's been overwhelmed by toxins, caused by poor diets and carcinogenic substances that has weakened the body's immune system.

A cancer growth is actually a sign from the body that something is wrong with the whole body and the growths themselves are only symptoms. Our current way of treating it by just removing these growths of course are only dealing with the symptoms. That's why it often returns. The long term solution is to change the factors that led to the cancer in the first place by removing the initial causes.

Don't put up with ineffective toxic treatments; learn about better ways to remove cancer permanently. We must never forget that our main weapon in fighting cancer is our own bodies defence system, which is the immune system. Strengthen it and the cancer will disappear and never return.

Breast Cancer and Positive Thinking Linked! One Woman's Fight

Breast Cancer and Positive Thinking Linked! One Woman's Fight

Earlier this year, a good friend phoned me and said: "I've got breast cancer!" The statement was delivered as succinct as that, quietly and with a pause afterwards - just like a death knell. As the recipient of this shocking news - what reply of any substance could I give? Feeling my awkwardness she quickly went on to explain how quickly it had all happened and so aggressive was the cancer that the surgery date had already been booked - all this in under ten days of finding the lump.

My friend is a bright and bubbly person, but even so I was in for another shock - when she rang the next day and said she is having, wait for it - a BYE BYE BOOBY party! So there we all were on the Saturday before B-Day occurring on the Monday. A small group of close friends with party food, wine and even a cake in the shape and colour of a boob - tip toeing around conversation topics and stealing quick glances at our friend to see how all this was affecting her. She was steely and chatty, but you could notice a little pre-occupied and for good reason.
Now some months later, she has got on with living this new lifestyle she never asked for or dreamed could happen to her and has endured all what horrible effects chemotherapy has to offer. Full of surprises as she has proven to be - as soon as she was discharged from hospital she immediately had her head shaven announcing to me - "I don't want to wait until it falls out, I'll get rid of it all now!"

Not once, in any of the many conversations we have had has she shown one ounce of negativity or "why did it happen to me" syndrome or speak in a depressed tone. Why? Absolutely without a doubt she embraces POSITIVE THINKING! She can personally see that taking the other road, won't improve her life in any way. Being positive helps to get her through one day at a time and look to the future. And there ARE aspects to look forward to!

I know she looks forward to: finishing the last two chemo sessions so she can enjoy feeling well again

I know she looks forward to: a new breast being created

I know she looks forward to: her hair returning

I know she looks forward to, most of all: having the assurance the cancer will never return!

Anyone using today's technology and specifically I'm referring to search engines, will find scientific research and personal accounts substantiating that breast cancer and positive thinking are linked. Of course, positive thinking can radically change any mental or physical situation not just breast cancer.

Rachel Charles from the UK is a victim of breast cancer and has written several books referring to the fighting spirit and mind, body and immunity. In an article titled - the Power of Positive Thinking - she documented her personal journey coping with this insidious disease and she outlines an amazing discovery along the way in her quest to learn more:

Psychoneuroimmunology: the science that studies the effect that the mind and emotions have on the immune system. Previously it had been supposed that immunity operated on its own, responding directly to harmful organisms, but here were research papers showing that the nervous and immune systems could 'talk' to each other via chemical messengers. This meant that both conscious and unconscious activities of the brain, including thoughts and mood, could affect the way that the white defence cells behave, causing them to be either more or less effective. Both doctors and psychotherapists have been aware for a long time of the close connections between mind and body, often observing that patients with 'fighting spirit' do better than those who give in to their illness. Such observations, however, have been merely anecdotal and have therefore lacked scientific credibility. Here at last were clear explanations of how a positive mental attitude could actually help boost immunity, and thereby encourage the body to heal itself. I now totally understood how it was that cancer patients who used visualization had a better prognosis than those who did nothing. These observations had been made in particular by Carl and Stephanie Simonton at their Cancer Counselling and Research Center in Dallas, Texas, and recounted in full in their best-selling book Getting Well Again.
Barbara Ehrenreich writes in The Guardian (2 January 2010) of her battle with breast cancer saying:

There was an urgent medical reason to embrace cancer with a smile: a "positive attitude" is supposedly essential to recovery. There were many times during chemotherapy, she encountered this assertion on websites, in books, from oncology nurses and fellow sufferers. One study found 60% of women who had been treated for the disease attributing their continued survival to a "positive attitude".
In a recent e-zine article entitled Breast Cancer Prevention Tips - and the notion of breast cancer "prevention" should itself set off alarms, since there is no known means of prevention - for example, advises that: "A simple positive and optimistic attitude has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer. This will sound amazing to many people; however, it will suffice to explain that several medical studies have demonstrated the link between a positive attitude and an improved immune system."

Indeed, there is even a Positive Thinking Day set aside for September 13 and in the 2008 Most Positive Person Contest, one of the award winners is a breast cancer survivor - Denise J. Hart. At the time of the competition she was a 5 year breast cancer survivor. She describes herself with a positive upbeat outlook and profoundly believes that her thoughts not only affect her wellbeing, but the whole universe. She has even created a positive message t-shirt company to reflect her beliefs and to help women live a more inspired and courageous life.
I wish to leave you with the following, for whatever you might be struggling with in your life and know that

POSITIVE THINKING does make a difference!

How to Begin Your Positive Day!
1. Affirmations - Affirmations everyday will help change the way you think - read books and listen to audios - there are many websites to assist you as well in this goal.

2. Intention - "Attitude" is the best word in the dictionary! Make it your intention when you wake up every morning to have a positive day!

3. Trigger - Choose a particular regular daily routine (I make a regular habit of focusing on giving thanks for all I have when I'm driving) to trigger a positive thought.

4. Gratitude - I keep a "gratitude pebble" (just a small stone from the garden) beside my computer at work so that when I'm flat out and stressed, it reminds me of all I am thankful for and slows me down to appreciate the moment. Keeping a log is a worthwhile exercise because as you write each part of your life you are thankful for down, you are affirming that two-fold - the thought and the action.

6. Inspiration - How many times have you received an inspirational YouTube video through your emails and your whole spirit is lifted for those few minutes? Seek out inspirational and motivational material to make you feel good. When you feel good you will act like a ricochet with people around you who can't help but feel the same affect.
7. Positive people - Hard to do in many situations, especially in your work place, but try to surround yourself with positive people who can help you stay positively focused. Your attitude can make a difference to others.

8. Love Yourself First - It is not being selfish or an act of narcissism. You need to feel you are a unique and worthwhile human being in order to value everyone you come into contact with.
9. Opportunity - Look past the immediate situation you've found yourself in and see what room there is in the "bigger picture" for growth and opportunity.

10. Smile - The one "light up the life of another" facial expression which is universal! It has no language barrier. It not only makes you feel good but the person who unexpectedly receives it! If you're a tightwad with everything else in your life - DON'T BE with your SMILE!

The Best Cancer Prevention Strategies

The Best Cancer Prevention Strategies

Let's talk a little bit about cancer.  Not about how devastating a disease it is.  Not about different treatment options.  Let's talk about some of the best strategies for avoiding cancer altogether.
There are those in the natural or alternative world that will tell you that cancer is not really a disease at all.  They'll tell you that it is a symptom.  A symptom of some imbalance going on inside your body.  If everything is balanced, cancer will not be able to exist.

But what is cancer a symptom of?  In other words, what conditions inside your body do cancer cells like to live in?  First, let's start with your immune system.  If your immune system is strong and working well, most cancers simply won't be able to take hold.  Second, there's your ph balance.  An overly acidic ph level is a good breeding ground for cancer, and a highly alkaline body is one where cancer will not survive.  Next, there's oxygen.  Cancer cells have lots of trouble surviving in a well oxygenated environment.  Then, there's oxidative stress.  Free radicals, you've probably heard of them.  Diets rich in anti-oxidants will scavenge free radicals and reduce your cancer risks, too.

In short, if your immune system is working to full capacity, your body is in an alkaline state, your blood is full of oxygen and you keep free radicals at bay, you shouldn't get cancer.  There are obviously other factors involved, but these four principles are a great foundation for cancer prevention.
Some quick tips to help accomplish these four goals are:
  • drink about half your body weight in ounces of clean water daily
  • eat a diet rich in colorful raw fruits and vegetables
  • start adding green superfoods such as chlorella & spirulina to your diet
  • exercise to some degree on a daily basis
  • obviously don't smoke
  • obviously limit your alcohol intake
  • limit your sugar intake including grains & starches
  • try to get at least 15 of unprotected sunlight each day
  • supplement with quality vitamin D if you live in a cold weather climate
If you start implementing some or all of these tips you're well on your way to keeping cancer out of your life forever!

If you or someone you care about is already past the point of prevention...or if you'd just like some resources to help others...there are over 350 natural, non-toxic cancer treatments that have been proven to work and you can find them here: http://killcancernow.blogspot.com

7 Good Tips To Prevent Getting Cancer

7 Good Tips To Prevent Getting Cancer

To keep it short and sweet lets just say there is TONS of evidence to show where the increase in cancer is coming from. This article will tell you the latest facts and tidbits to help you prevent getting cancer.
1. To prevent getting cancer watch what you expose yourself too! Toxic molecules called free radicals have been proven to damage or mutate our cells at the molecular level. To prevent getting cancer avoid these toxic molecules as much as possible. Common sources are:
-House hold chemicals
-pesticides on your food
-air pollution
-stress
-increased sun exposure
-partially hydrogenated oils
-and everything else that doesn't seem natural to your body.
2. Watch what you eat! Diets rich in fruit and vegetables provide your body with very important antioxidants, which have been shown to prevent free radical damage. On the contrary bad foods which are loaded up with chemicals, preservatives, and processed garbage will weaken your body and increase your risks of disease.

3. Eat Organic Foods. Organic has much less risks of being contaminated with cancer causing molecules.

4. Reduce your stress and relax as much as possible to help prevent getting cancer! Stress has been proven to release a toxic hormone into your body that scientists have named "the death hormone" as it has devastating effects on other cells in your body. Do Yoga, Exercise, meditate, all proven things to help lower stress, ease anxiety, and promote an all around sense of well being.

5. Be emotionally healthy! Your emotions take a toll on your physical body if you store lots of emotional pain and baggage. Express whatever might be causing you pain and suffering and you will reduce risks of being prone to physical and mental disease.

6. Take a high quality nutritional supplement to help prevent getting cancer. High quality supplements have been proven to boost nutrient protection in the body and can add crucial defense where you might need it. Make sure it is a high quality supplement, and not some cheap industrial made manufactured vitamin which has very poor nutrient quality.

7. Be more Aware! Paying attention to all these things and living a more aware lifestyle will help prevent getting cancer. Watching over yourself and making sure you are making healthy decisions, and reducing exposure to cancer causing risk factors will make a huge difference in your life.

It's simple enough that anyone can do it, and these 7 highly effective tips could be the difference between you getting cancer or the other 1 out of 2.5 people in North America who will get cancer in their lifetime. Yea it's that bad. And to prevent getting cancer we all have to start taking our health very seriously. Be more aware in your life and you are taking the first crucial step!

3 best Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer

3  BEST Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer

It's October and while Summer is over, the sun still shines. Sun exposure is good for us as it is a natural source of Vitamin D. Too much of anything though is not good and that definitely includes sun exposure. Whenever you are exposed to the sun you need to take precautions to protect yourself. In this article I will cover some of the ways to protect yourself in order to aid in the prevention of skin cancer.

Our skin, I've read, is our largest organ. Most of us do not think of it in this way, but if we did we would realize that we need to look after it just as we would our heart, liver or kidneys. We must protect our skin from environmental damage. If you do not protect your skin from sun, wind and environmental pollutants, chances are that, at the least, you will experience premature aging of your skin, or worse, skin cancer.

During the winter months many of us go outdoors to ski or have fun in the snow. You must remember that the sun and wind can still cause damage to your skin during Winter so it is vital to use skin protection.
UVA and UVB rays can be extremely harmful and can also cause skin cancer. You need to make sure that any protective clothing or sunscreens you use protect from both of these.

Here are some tips to help protect you from skin damage;

1. Do not overdo sun exposure. Experts say that this is particularly important during the hottest part of the day between 11 am and 3 pm when the sun is at maximum strength. Always wear sun protection even if simply gardening for an hour or doing any outdoor activity during these times of day.

2. Dress to protect - Again, experts suggest that a wide brimmed hat, in combination with cool, light colored clothing can help to prevent over exposure. Sunglasses with UV protection are recommended to protect your eyes. Many do not even think of their eyes as needing protection but they do.

3. Use a sun block with SPF 15 or higher. Do not forget your lips to prevent burning, and chapped lips. I once read that going in the sun without any lip protection is like kissing a hot light bulb. Remember above when I said that our skin is our largest organ? I've also read that we should not put anything on our skin that we would not be willing to put into our mouth so I highly recommend that you do not use any of the regular sunscreens, but instead buy organic sunscreens. They are definitely more expensive but, in my opinion, well worth it.
I hope you heed these straightforward but very important facts as tips to protect yourself and help prevent you or any of your loved ones ever getting skin cancer.

4 Top Tips For Preventing Skin Cancer

4 Top Tips For Preventing Skin Cancer

Approximately 60,000 people in the UK contract skin cancer each year. It begins when process of cell division goes wrong in the skin and it starts to grow in a rapid, out of control way. This then leads to the formation of a cancerous tumour which usually resembles a blemish on the skin. Whilst this type of cancer is one of the most common it is also very preventable. In this article I am going to be discussing four things you can do to help prevent skin cancer.

1) AVOID PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THE SUN:- Sunlight does have a number of benefits. It prompts the body to produce vitamin D and can also help you avoid seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in the winter months. However, like all good things you can get too much. Prolonged exposure to sunlight exposes your body to ultraviolet (UV) light which ultimately damages the DNA in your skin cells and leads to skin cancer. Therefore, if you know that you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period make sure that shelter is available so that you can take regular breaks from the sunlight.

2) USE SUN CREAM:- As I mentioned above the reason that sunlight leads to skin cancer is that it contains UV light which damages your skin cells. Sun cream contains ingredients that block these UV rays and stop them from damaging your skin. Therefore, if you are out in the sun make sure you have sun cream with you. Ideally try and apply it to your skin 15 minutes before going out in the sun and make sure you re-apply it regularly.
3) WEAR SENSIBLE CLOTHING:- Clothing can offer you fantastic protection from the sunlight and the damaging UV rays. Whilst it is tempting to walk around wearing as little as possible when the sun is shining this puts you at an increased for skin cancer if you are out in the sun for a long period. Therefore, you need to make sure you have some clothing with you that can cover your body and perhaps a hat to protect your face as well. You don't have to cover up all the time that you are in the sun but make sure you do not leave your skin exposed for extended periods.

4) DON'T USE SUNBEDS:- Sunbeds use concentrated UV rays so even though a session on a sunbed is relatively short it is potentially more dangerous than staying out in the sun for a long time. If you really want a tan then do it naturally by sunbathing with regular breaks in the shade and regular doses of sun cream. Alternatively, try the increasingly available range of tanning products that are out there. Tanning in the sun will expose your skin to less intense UV rays whilst using tanning products will mean you avoid UV rays completely. Both of these options are safer than being exposed to the high doses of UV rays that a sunbed provides.

Tips on Preventing Aging Skin and Preventing the Signs of Aging Skin

Tips on Preventing Aging Skin and Preventing the Signs of Aging Skin

Seems like the main pursuit of staying young looking is preventing aging skin. It is not a hard thing to do if you have the right tools. The right tools will prevent the signs of aging skin before they happen. And if you are of the age where they have already happened, you can start using the correct skin care products for help in preventing aging skin from getting worse.

Something even better to hear is if you use the right tools you can actually reverse the signs of aging skin. If you are like me and didn't take very good care of your skin during your thirties and forties and your skin now show the signs of aging skin you will be glad to know something can be done about it.

You don't need expensive surgery. And you certainly don't want to use products with chemicals in them. The correct tools you need to use are natural ingredients in your skin care products that will sooth your skin without harming your skin or your health.

Ingredients to look for are ones that are compatible with your own skin's oil like avocado oil. This oil hydrates deeply into the pores of the skin getting beneath the top layer of skin to thoroughly moisturize. Avocado oil is not just a feel good substance. It has been scientifically proven to stimulate collagen growth to make your skin feel and look younger and smoother.

Another great component of natural skin care is shea butter, because it is a natural moisturizer, which softens and soothes inflamed skin. It will absorb into the skin without a greasy feeling leaving your skin smooth and soft. Shea butter is rich in vitamin A, vitamin E and many essential fatty acids. Clinical studies have shown that in as little as four to six weeks you can have younger looking skin when applying products that contain shea butter.
Don't be fooled by the advertisements you see and read for products that are filled with chemical concoctions that do nothing more than give you something to spend your money on. Many chemicals in skin care products actually can you do more harm than good.

One chemical major companies use as a preservative is paraben. You'll find this in most every bottle of skin care products you pick up off the shelf at your local drug store. Don't buy these products. Parabens have been linked to breast cancer, because it mimics the estrogen in our bodies, which leaves us more susceptible to cancer cells.

A better preservative to look for in skin products is natural vitamin E. This is a safe alternative that won't put you at risk for getting cancer. Vitamin E is also an antioxidant. Which helps rid our skin of free radicals.
So whether it is preventing aging skin or reversing the signs of aging skin that you are pursuing, be sure to buy products with safe natural ingredients. Don't settle for anything less than safe. Your health depends on it, and so does your desire for smooth younger looking skin.

Preventing bowel cancer tips

Preventing bowel cancer tips

 Can bowel cancer be prevented?

International comparisons show that bowel cancer is much less common in some countries and regions than others. In industrial countries like Germany, for example, the rate of bowel cancer is higher than in Asia and Africa [1],[12]. Inside Europe there are definite differences as well. For example, the rate of bowel cancer in Greece is lower than the rate in Germany [13].

Researchers have been studying possible explanations for these differences for years. They have compared, for example, whether certain foods are eaten more often in countries or by communities of people who get bowel cancer less often, or if other differences exist that may explain why the disease is less common. The result is a long list of factors that can be divided into 4 groups.

The first group includes factors that people with a lower risk of bowel cancer have in common:

1.Fibre-rich diet [14].

2.Regular physical exercise [15]

The second group includes factors that people with a higher risk of bowel cancer have in common:

1.Being overweight or obese [16]

2.Diet with a lot of red or processed meats [17]

The third group includes factors where there is no definite detectable difference in the risk of bowel cancer:

1.Eating meat at all [17]

2.Cereals, nuts and seeds [17]

3.Fruit, vegetables or legumes (beans, peas, lentils) [17]

4.Tea (black and green) and coffee [17]

5.Dairy products [17]

6.Vitamin D [18]

7.Folate or folic acid supplements [19]

8.Low-fat diet

The fourth group includes factors where it is uncertain whether or not there is a link with bowel cancer risk [17].

However these factors are still being researched, as there is some possibility that they might increase the risk of bowel cancer:

1.Smoking [20]

2High alcohol consumption [21]

3.Eating eggs every day [17]

4.Smoked and/or salted fish [17]

5.Chlorinated water[17]

Top 9: EWG's Cancer Prevention Tips

Top 9: EWG's Cancer Prevention Tips

According to a new report from the President's Cancer Panel, environmental toxins play a significant and under-recognized role in cancer, causing "grievous harm" to untold numbers of people. Our groundbreaking research into umbilical cord blood has found that children are being born pre-polluted with nearly 300 industrial chemicals, pesticides and contaminants, many of which have been found to cause cancer in lab studies or in people.

Four of every 10 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, and two of every 10 will die from it. Beyond talking to your doctor about lifestyle changes that are known to make a difference -- stopping smoking, reducing drinking, losing weight, exercising and eating right -- there are things you can do to reduce your risk.

Here are some simple ways you can reduce your exposure to potentially cancer-causing chemicals

1. Filter your tap water. Common carcinogens in tap water include arsenic, chromium, and chemical byproducts that form when water is disinfected. A simple carbon tap-mounted filter or pitcher can help reduce the levels of some of these contaminants. If your water is polluted with arsenic or chromium, a reverse osmosis filter will help. Learn about your tap water and home water filters at EWG's National Tap Water Database.

2. Seal outdoor wooden decks and play sets. Those built before 2005 are likely coated with an arsenic pesticide that can stick to hands and clothing. Learn more from EWG.

3. Cut down on stain- and grease-proofing chemicals. "Fluorochemicals" related to Teflon and Scotchgard are used in stain repellants on carpets and couches and in greaseproof coatings for packaged and fast foods. To avoid them, avoid greasy packaged foods and say no to optional stain treatments in the home. Download EWG's Guide to PFCs.

4. Stay safe in the sun. More than one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. To protect your skin from the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) radiation, seek shade, wear protective clothing and use a safe and effective sunscreen from EWG's sunscreen database.

5. Cut down on fatty meat and high-fat dairy products. Long-lasting cancer-causing pollutants like dioxins and PCBs accumulate in the food chain and concentrate in animal fat.

6. Eat EWG's Clean 15. Many pesticides have been linked to cancer. Eating from EWG's Clean 15 list of the least contaminated fruits and vegetables will help cut your pesticide exposures. (And for EWG's Dirty Dozen, buy organic.) Learn more at EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides.

7. Cut your exposures to BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic estrogen found in some hard plastic water bottles, canned infant formula, and canned foods. Some of these chemicals cause cancer in lab studies. To avoid them, eat fewer canned foods, breast feed your baby or use powdered formula, and choose water bottles free of BPA. Get EWG's tips to avoid it.

8. Avoid carcinogens in cosmetics. Use EWG's Skin Deep cosmetic database to find products free of chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer. When you're shopping, don't buy products that list ingredients with "PEG" or "-eth" in their name (chemicals often tainted with contaminants linked to cancer).

9. Read the warnings. Some products list warnings of cancer risks -- read the label before you buy. Californians will see a "Proposition 65" warning label on products that contain chemicals the state has identified as cancer-causing.

best tips that how cancer is prevented

Can cancer be prevented? best tips ever that how cancer is prevented

Yes. In fact, at the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention, we estimate that more than half of all cancers in the US could be prevented. Each year over 1 million people in this country are diagnosed with some form of cancer, but this number could be significantly reduced by basic lifestyle changes. There are some things, like age and family history, that we can’t control. However, there are steps that everyone can take to lower their risk of getting cancer:

Don’t smoke, and avoid second-hand smoke.

Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the US. It causes about 30% of all the cancer in this country, including cancers of the lung, mouth, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, cervix, kidney, and bladder. Smoking also leads to many other health problems, including heart disease, stroke, lung infections, and pregnancy complications. Even the smoke from other people’s tobacco use (second-hand smoke) is harmful, increasing the risk of lung cancer and heart disease in nonsmokers. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are at higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome, asthma, lung infections, and ear infections. The good news is that as soon as people quit smoking, their health starts to improve. Quitting smoking is the single best thing that smokers can do to improve their health.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Excess weight has been linked to a variety of cancers, including colon, breast, and uterine cancer, and many other chronic diseases, like diabetes and heart disease. Almost 65% of adults are overweight, and over 30% are considered obese. For reduction of cancer risk and other health benefits, we should balance the amount of calories consumed with regular physical activity.

Be physically active.

Physical activity not only helps achieve a healthy weight, it also lowers the risk of breast and colon cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes. It enhances mood, improves sleep, and helps people reduce stress. Activity doesn’t need to be strenuous to be beneficial. Moderate exercise, like brisk walking, offers health benefits. Physical activity is important for children since healthy patterns of behavior can be established at a young age, and exercise in childhood may affect disease risk later in life. Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

Eat a healthy diet.

What we eat can have a significant impact on cancer risk. Eeating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains has been linked to a lower risk of multiple cancers and heart disease. Eating less red meat helps limit the amount of unhealthy saturated fat in the diet and decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, and prostate cancer. While eating a variety of healthy foods provides most of the vitamins our bodies need, taking a multivitamin with folate every day can offer extra protection against colon cancer, heart disease, and certain birth defects. Important in any healthy diet is total calories because excess calories from any source can lead to weight gain.

Limit alcohol.

Alcohol has different effects on different diseases. While it may help reduce the risk of heart disease, it also increases the risk of several cancers, including breast, colon, esophageal, and oral cancer. Alcohol use comes with risk of increasing blood pressure, weight, heart failure, addiction, suicide and accidents; therefore nondrinkers should not start drinking. Drinkers should limit alcohol intake to a moderate amount (1 drink/day for women, 2 drinks/day for men).

Protect your skin from the sun.

Sun exposure causes the majority of skin cancer. Some forms of skin cancer, like melanoma, can be fatal, and others, such as basal cell and squamous cell cancer, can be highly disfiguring. Since about 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs before the age of 18, sun protection is critical for children. Adults need to avoid excess sun to prevent additional skin damage and to provide good examples for their children. It is best to avoid extended periods in the sun between 10 am and 4 pm, use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, and wear protective hats and sunglasses.

Get regular screening tests.

While we don’t have screening tests for most cancers, we do have tests for colon, breast, prostate, and cervical cancer. Screening tests can work either detecting changes before they become cancer or finding cancer at an earlier and more treatable stage. Screening saves lives, but only if people get tested. Talk to your doctor about what tests are right for you.

Make healthy choices.

Of course, each individual is unique, and it is impossible to predict who will or won’t develop cancer. However, many healthy life choices offer multiple benefits, reducing the risk of a variety of cancers and other chronic diseases. For more information on strategies to prevent disease, visit www.yourcancerrisk.harvard.edu. Even small behavior changes can bring significant health benefits and improve the chances of living a long and healthy life.

How to Help Prevent Pancreatic Cancer

 By

Pancreatic cancer is a serious cancer. It is estimated that almost 37,000 people will die from pancreatic cancer each year. Will taking fish oil supplements containing Omega 3 daily help prevent pancreatic cancer?

Whilst cancers such as prostate cancer and breast cancer are commonly in the news pancreatic cancer is not. And yet it is the 4th biggest killer in the US when it comes to cancers. Unfortunately the prognosis for people who suffer from cancer of the pancreas is not good, and like all cancers it is much better to prevent pancreatic cancer than it is to attempt to cure it.

There is now a growing body of evidence that a wide range of cancers may well be positively benefited from an increase in the intake of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid). These are known as essential fatty acids because they are very important to good health however they are unable to be produced in the body and must be taken in through the diet.

And over the last century our intake of Omega 3 rich foods has declined dramatically. The 2 most important of the essential fatty acids are DHA and EPA, and these are found primarily in fish and in particular in oily fish, and our intakes of fish and seafood generally have dropped considerably. Other sources of the Omega 3 fats have included grass fed beef and free range eggs, however our beef is now primarily grain fed, which reduces the Omega 3 content, and the same applies to our eggs.

A new study done on residents of the San Francisco Bay Area has found that increasing the intake of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, in conjunction with an increase in intake of vitamin C and vitamin E may reduce the risks of pancreatic cancer by up to 30 percent.

And the study also noted that a high intake of saturated fat may in fact increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by anywhere up to 60 percent.

Of course it is always difficult to say when this is sufficiently proven, and clearly more studies are needed, however this also aligns with other studies suggesting that increasing the intake of Omega 3 fats may help prevent other cancers, including breast cancer and bowel cancer.

However the health benefits of taking Omega 3 daily extend to much more than just the possibility of preventing pancreatic cancer. Many of the health benefits of an increased intake of essential fatty acids are now accepted by mainstream medicine, and mainstream organisations such as the American Heart Association are now telling us to increase our intake of the essential fats to avoid such health issues as heart disease.

So whether you are concerned about pancreatic cancer or not there are a wide range of health benefits to be gained from increasing your intake of essential fatty acids. You do that by taking high quality fish oil supplements containing Omega 3 daily.

However not all fish oil supplements are high quality. To find out which are visit my website.

Ten Tips For the Prevention of Cancer

By  Kirsten Whittaker

Following are the best ten tips to prevent the cancer.

1) Be as lean as possible, but not underweight. Collins suggests not just checking the number on the scales, but also measuring your waist to get a feel for your abdominal fat. Men should have a waist measurement no larger than 37 inches; women's waists should be 31.5 inches or less.

2) Be active for at least 30 minutes every day on most days of the week. If you're out of shape or very sedentary, talk with your doctor first. Then start slow and build gradually over time. And contrary to popular belief, you can break up your workout - 10 to 15 minute sessions, twice a day are just fine according to Collins.

3) Avoid sugary drinks and consumption of energy-dense foods. No one is saying these foods (or their additives) cause cancer, but they do add extra calories to your diet, and can sabotage your healthy weight over time. A treat now and then is fine, all the time can really blow your calorie budget.

4) Eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes. You'll want to try to add a lot of different colors (deep green leafy veggies, blueberries, etc.) to your meals. Most Americans, says Collins, are stuck in a rut of eating the same three vegetables over and over. Try something new, you just might like it and be helping your body at the same time!

5) If you drink at all, limit alcoholic drinks to two a day for men and one for women. To do this, you'll need to keep an eye on the bartender as according to Collins, drinks can have a higher alcohol content than expected. Willett was quick to caution that the pros and cons of moderate drinking is something that women should consider carefully, weighing the heart benefits against the increased breast cancer risk from drinking.

6) Limit red meats (beef, pork, lamb) and avoid processed meats. Good as they may taste, you'll want to keep your red meat intake to 18 ounces a week, says Collins. She suggests choosing chicken, seafood, or legumes in place of red meat, and encourages moderation rather than eliminating these meats entirely from the diet.

7) Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with sodium. You'll want to try and keep your sodium intake under 2,400 milligrams a day. To add flavor to food, use herbs and spices instead, says Collins. She points out that processed foods account for a large part of sodium intake today - so don't worry so much about the salt you add when cooking or eating, rather read the labels of the foods you buy.

8) Don't use supplements to protect against cancer. This is a recommendation that is likely to be reviewed, but for now the experts are cautioning against taking a supplement purely for cancer protection benefits. It's not that supplements are bad, but the science doesn't support (except in the case of vitamin D) the idea that these substances can protect against cancer.

9) Mothers should try to breastfeed babies exclusively for up to six months and then add other foods and liquids. If this is an option for you, it's a good idea and provides the baby with many healthy benefits.

10) After treatment, cancer survivors should follow the recommendations for cancer prevention. This includes patients who are currently undergoing treatment, as well as those who have finished their therapy and are being monitored. Once you've beaten your cancer back, you need to do all you can to keep your body in top form - healthy and strong enough to resist anything that comes your way.

You need to keep in mind that while these tips are sensible suggestions they are only intended to reduce (not eliminate) your risk of cancer. There are many other things (genetics and environmental factors to name a few) that contribute to cancer risk, but these lifestyle choices give you some control over the aspects you can change and help you to better avoid cancer.

Next just head on over to the Daily Health Bulletin for more tips on how to avoid cancer and get 5 free revealing Health reports.

best diet for cancer patients

Heart-healthy & Cancer-preventive Diet for Your 2011

With the new year coming, we challenge you to change your lifestyle to prevent major chronic diseases including heart disease and cancer, and save lives. You can start by improving your daily diet. 3 basic components or principles of heart-healthy and cancer-preventive diet are similar to Mediterranean diet, including:

1.Healthy and nutritious diets:  a plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and fish or seafood, with limited red meat, unhealthy fats, salt and sugar.  Addition of olive oil.

2.A glass of red wine --- Important: use it moderately but never abuse it. Alternatively, drink grape juice, which also contains resveratrol.

3.Healthy eating consists of not only a balanced diet but also proper eating habits (from having daily breakfast, avoiding a big meal to not abusing alcohol).

best tips to prevent the cancer

Breast Cancer Prevention Tips:

Is soy a super food for healthy breasts? With one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer over a lifetime, identifying foods that may help prevent such a diagnosis would be a welcome discovery. Research from Korea shows that soy just might be one of those foods.

Before you start filling your lunch plate with tofu and edamame, keep in mind that this study only showed an association between women who had breast cancer compared to those who didn’t. It does not imply cause and effect, and so can’t guarantee that a diet high in soy will prevent breast cancer.

That being said, soy definitely has a place in a healthy diet. The Okinawans are known to live longer than any other group of people in the world, and one of their main sources of protein is soy.

Along with soy, other foods that might play a helping hand in preventing breast cancer include:

1.Cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and Brussels sprouts

2.Flax or sesame seeds: If you eat them ground up (instead of whole), you’ll absorb them and their powerful phytonutrient “lignans” better.

3.Avoiding alcohol: Even a small amount can raise your risk of breast cancer.

4.Use a fish oil supplement or perhaps just increase your intake of fatty fish like sardines, salmon and mackerel. If you want to use the supplement, talk to your doctor first.

TIPS TO PREVENT THE CANCER

8 Lifestyle Tips for Cancer Prevention

Diet, Activity Recommendations May Reduce the Risk of Cancer, Experts Say

By Miranda Hitti

Oct. 28, 2008 -- Looking for ways to cut your risk of developing cancer? Here's a list of 10 diet and activity recommendations highlighted this week in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

1.Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight.

2.Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day.

3.Avoid sugary drinks, and limit consumption of high-calorie foods, especially those low in fiber and rich in fat or added sugar.

4.Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes (such as beans).

5.Limit consumption of red meats (including beef, pork, and lamb) and avoid processed meats.

6.If you drink alcohol, limit your daily intake to two drinks for men and one drink for women.

7.Limit consumption of salty foods and food processed with salt (sodium).

8.Don't use supplements to try to protect against cancer.

After treatment, cancer survivors should follow the recommendations for cancer prevention.

How to Follow the Recommendations

Karen Collins, MS, RD, CDN, is the nutritional advisor for the American Institute for Cancer Research. She reviewed the recommendations before they were issued last year, and she joined Willett in talking to ADA members.

Collins provides these tips for each of the recommendations

Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight: Don't just look at the scale; check your waist measurement as a crude measurement of your abdominal fat, Collins says. She recommends that men's waists be no larger than 37 inches and women's waists be 31.5 inches or less.

Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day: You can break that into 10- to 15-minute blocks, and even more activity may be better, notes Collins.

Avoid sugary drinks and limit consumption of energy-dense foods: It's not that those foods directly cause cancer, but they could blow your calorie budget if you often overindulge, notes Collins, who suggests filling up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes such as beans: Go for a variety of colors (like deep greens of spinach, deep blues of blueberries, whites of onions and garlic, and so on). Most Americans, says Collins, are stuck in a rut of eating the same three vegetables over and over.

If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to two for men and one for women per day: Watch your portion size; drinks are often poured liberally, notes Collins. Willett adds that the pros and cons of moderate drinking is something that women may particularly need to consider, weighing the heart benefits and increased breast cancer risk from drinking.

Limit red meats (beef, pork, lamb) and avoid processed meats: Limit red meats to 18 ounces per week, says Collins, who suggests using chicken, seafood, or legumes in place of red meat. Collins isn't saying to never eat red meat, just do so in moderation.

Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with sodium: Don't go over 2,400 milligrams per day, and use herbs and spices instead, says Collins. She adds that processed foods account for most sodium intake nowadays -- not salt you add when cooking or eating.

Don't use supplements to protect against cancer: It's not that supplements are bad -- they may be "valuable" apart from cancer prevention, but there isn't evidence that they protect against cancer, except for vitamin D, says Collins.
It's best for mothers to breastfeed babies exclusively for up to six months and then add other foods and liquids: Hospitals could encourage this more, Collins says.

After treatment, cancer survivors should follow the recommendations for cancer prevention. Survivors include people undergoing cancer treatment, as well as people who have finished their cancer treatment.
